Numerous pension plans have had funding problems in recent years.   The passage of numerous recent legislation has been working to improve funding.  Reuters has an article by Mark Miller about not cutting benefits located at http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/20/column-miller-idUSL1E8HJD5A20120620.  Mr. Miller has some excellent points about pension benefits.  I can personally relate to his comments since when I was younger I worked for the government, and, at the time, the organization had opted out of the social security system.  As a result, I do not have earnings credited for those years.  Many individuals may not be aware that not all government employees are part of the social security system.
