When to Retire

The Chicago Tribune has an article, ” 70 is not the new 65″, by Jill Schlesinger, CFP that discusses retirement age.  Located at http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-201209261430–tms–retiresmctnrs-a20120926-20120926,0,6689884.story, the article discusses whether it is worthwhile to postpone retirement five more years.

Pension Management Versus Other Investor Management

The Wall Street Journal has an article, ” Pension Managers Become Opportunistic Amid Volatility: Survey”, on their website at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10000872396390444358804578016861207402182.html.  The article discusses how managers of everyday investors have moved to more conservative investments.  In contrast, professional managers of retirement funds have moved toward more equities and active management.

Investment Diversification Article for 401(k) and Other Participant Directed Plans

Reuters has a nice article, ” Diversify your 401(k) in 9 easy steps”, by A. Michael Lipper located at http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/09/26/funds-lipper-diversifying-idINL1E8KP6L420120926.  The author suggests nine basic types of funds to include in your retirement plan line up.  An easy to understand source and summary.  In addition, he makes a comment regarding how he would like to also see a managed account.  That idea is another consideration for plan sponsors.

IRS Phone Forum Link Updated, Free CE!

As I mentioned last week, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be having another free phone forum on September 27, 2012.  Sign up can be accessed at http://ems.intellor.com/index.cgi?p=204400&t=71&do=register&s=&rID=417&edID=305. The redesigned IRS website now appears to be updated with the new forums and a great historical resource of older forums located at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Phone-Forums-Retirement-Plans.

EBSA Spanish Language Materials for Participants

I came across the following newsletter from Phyllis Borzi, Assistant Secretary for the Employee Benefits Security Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor, about the EBSA’s National Hispanic Heritage Month efforts.   The article, located on the EBSA website at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsletter/, references some great Spanish language materials that would be useful to employers with large Spanish-speaking populations.  A great resource to share to encourage retirement savings!

Fiduciary Duty and Conflicts of Interest

The issues of conflicts of interest in regards to fiduciary duty is discussed in an article, “Why Nobody Likes Stinky Pete: What Conflict-of-Interest Means to Investors”, by Christopher Carosa, CTFA, located at http://fiduciarynews.com/2012/09/why-nobody-likes-stinky-pete-what-conflict-of-interest-means-to-investors/.  I particularly like his example of the difference in cost to investors who buy mutual funds directly versus through brokers.

Another Pension Plan Provisions of MAP-21 FREE Phone Forum
