Participants Designing Their Own 401(k) Investment Portfolios

The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) has an article, “Do-it-Myself’ Investors vs. Target-Date Funds”, located at http://www.shrm.org/hrdisciplines/benefits/Articles/Pages/Investors-Target-Date-Funds.aspx.  The article discusses a study by Principal which indicated that participants doing the investment design on their own compared to those who use a target date fund were less diversified.  It should be noted that Principal does have their own target date funds so it will be interesting to find out if this data has been confirmed by an unbiased source or has been seen on a larger scale.
