Michael Lipper located at http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/09/26/funds-lipper-diversifying-idINL1E8KP6L420120926.  The author suggests nine basic types of funds to include in your retirement plan line up.  An easy to understand source and summary.  In addition, he makes a comment regarding how he would like to also see a managed account.  That idea is another consideration for plan sponsors.
