Retirement Plan Sponsor Due Date Chart

In their recent Employee Plan News located at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Internal-Controls-are-Essential-in-Retirement-Plans, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has an article about internal controls.  One of the items plan sponsors need to do is ensure they are filing necessary tax forms on a timely basis.  The IRS has a handy chart located at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Plan-Sponsor/401(k)-Resource-Guide—Plan-Sponsors—Filing-Requirements. The chart has a synopsis of what the forms are and when they are due.  It will be necessary to communicate with your TPA to ensure they are preparing any necessary forms in a timely manner so fees and interest are not accrued for late filings.

I discuss determining TPA qualifications in my book, A Short Guide to Finding a High Value, Low Fee Third Party Administrator (TPA) for Your Retirement Plan, available at amazon.com. My goal is to help plan sponsors make the best decision they can when selecting a  TPA.

Retirement Plan Minimum Distributions Part III

As the end of year approaches, participants who are required to take their minimum required distributions and are not eligible for the April first year extension, will need to make sure they do before year-end. The IRS has added a nice minimum distribution resource chart to their website, RMD Comparison Chart (IRAs vs. Defined Contribution Plans). Located at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/RMD-Comparison-Chart-(IRAs-vs.-Defined-Contribution-Plans), the chart discusses the laws deadlines and calculations for minimum distributions for qualified retirement plans and IRA’s.

Sandy Relief Part 2 – Hardships & Loans from Retirement Plans

As I mentioned recently, the IRS announced Sandy relief for retirement plans.   Located on their website at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Hurricane-Sandy-Relief-Retirement-Plan-Loans-&-Distributions, the IRS details the available relief in a convenient chart format. Participants in a qualified 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b) plan may be eligible to take a hardship or loan, if the plan document allows, for expenses related to Hurricane Sandy. As detailed in the chart, participants will need to live or work as of the date listed in the affected zone.
