Selecting Retirement Plan Service Provider – Advisor

The Department of Labor (DOL) has posted a nice article regarding plan advisors. The article, “How to Tell Whether Your Adviser is Working in Your Best Interest: A Fiduciary Guide for Individual Consumers”, is located at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsroom/fsfiduciaryoutreachconsumers.html. The article contains some nice basic questions and provides some additional resources. However, it is also important that an advisor be ethical. Inquiring about different ethical situations may prove useful. Checking to ensure that the necessary internal controls are also in place is important. When an advisor wants you to work with business partners or use side services provided by the advisor, it is important to check out that every party working on your retirement plan is credentialed and, if applicable, enrolled. If every part is not the best, the advisor is clearly not interested in you or providing you the best service. They should not be solely concerned about lining their own pocket. Major Life Events and Retirement

IMG_3098-1

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has posted a nice resource list for participants about major life events and your retirement plan.  The resource list, “Changes in Your Life May Affect Retirement Planning”, is located at http://www.irs.gov/Retirement-Plans/Plan-Participant,-Employee/Changes-in-Your-Life-May-Affect-Retirement-Planning.  As you would expect, topics include marriage, children, divorce, disability, and death.  The resource would be very nice to share with plan sponsors and participants.

DC Plan 2013 Participant Activity

An interesting study was released indicating that participants remained on course in their retirement savings last year.  The article, “ICI Defined Contribution Plan Recordkeeper Data Show Continued Commitment to Retirement Saving” by Targeted News Service is located at http://www6.lexisnexis.com/publisher/EndUserAction=UserDisplayFullDocument&orgId=2778&topicId=100023346&docId=l:2061865047&Em=7&start=1.  The article notes only a negligible change in participants who stopped deferring and noted little change in withdrawal activity.  I did find it noteworthy that they indicated that loan activity levels remained high, likely due to overall domestic economic problems.
