Selecting Retirement Plan Service Provider – Advisor

The Department of Labor (DOL) has posted a nice article regarding plan advisors. The article, “How to Tell Whether Your Adviser is Working in Your Best Interest: A Fiduciary Guide for Individual Consumers”, is located at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/newsroom/fsfiduciaryoutreachconsumers.html. The article contains some nice basic questions and provides some additional resources. However, it is also important that an advisor be ethical. Inquiring about different ethical situations may prove useful. Checking to ensure that the necessary internal controls are also in place is important. When an advisor wants you to work with business partners or use side services provided by the advisor, it is important to check out that every party working on your retirement plan is credentialed and, if applicable, enrolled. If every part is not the best, the advisor is clearly not interested in you or providing you the best service. They should not be solely concerned about lining their own pocket.
